Daily Struggles - What it Means to be Poor in America

For the past few years, the economy in the United States (and around the world) has been challenging to say the least. You recently read an article about minimum wage in Australia and how some workers are underpaid. Even though the minimum wage in Australia is much higher than it is here, it still has an impact on the lifestyle of the people who live there.

Be sure to check Edmodo for the necessary videos to watch, articles to read , and games to play before responding here.

What does that mean in the US? Did you know that 1 in 3 working families are considered Low Income Families? So, what if you were stuck with a low paying job? How would that affect you and your family? Could you survive? How would you feel about that? What were the most surprising statistics that you read or stories that you heard? Why?

  1. If I was in a low paying job, I would get a better degree. I don't really like thinking that though. I would in a homeless center. :p

  2. I think that the effects of low paying jobs are hard on a person. I think it would be a great eye-opening experience for someone who employs a person who is not able to pay for their kids to join a sports team. I think it would be a very emotional experience. If I was stuck with a low paying job, I think that it would be really hard to choose which bills to pay first and what might happen if I don't pay them.

  3. I think that we need more dependable things for the homeless people to go to so that they don't get kicked out of there beds before they even get to stay one night there. Also it's not as easy to control your money and what to use it for. I think it would be a great eye opening experience for people who get paid but can't afford for there kids to do anything. If I was stuck with a low paying job, I think that it would be really hard to choose which bills to pay first and what might happen if I don't pay them.

  4. I think that is really sad learning that some people don't have money to pay for groceries or to go to the dentist. And some not to pay there electrical, or gas bills. Knowing that the bills just keep piling on for people that is just terrible. And with this economy it is hard to get a job so if you have no job it is much harder.

  5. I'm glad I'm not in that position! Not being to be able to go to school, eat, have fun, use heat/ac. There is always a worse position.

  6. If I got a low paying job it would be kind of hard to buy food and water. And it would also be hard to take care of your bills. I think it would be really hard.

  7. It definitely would be very hard to get a very low salary. In order to be able to pay for your bills, you might have to have your kids get a job at a little bit younger age than most kids do. You would have to be a very low spender also.

  8. I think that Karly may want to go back and watch the video before commenting further. The first homeless man that's interviewed has two bachelor's degrees and a master's degree. How many more degrees should he get to insure that he is no longer homeless?

What are some of the surprising statistics you read in the article or watched in the film? What shocked you the most? What did you learn by playing the game?

  9. I think it would be very hard for the U.S. to live with such a low amount of money. I did not know that so much people are working with a low amount of money. If I was stuck with a low paying job I would be sure to work a lot but I would not be able to spend time with my family so it would be bad for them. It depends on how many family members you have and how much money you have to spend.I would feel bad and mad at myself because I did bad and could not get a good job and not much money.

  10. I think that it is sad that people have no money sometimes. And sometimes can't pay for the things he needs. The 1st homeless guy in the video I think is going to go along way. I think he is going to be a great smart and successful man in the future. I also think that he isn't going to be homeless for long. I really liked the game on playspent because I really think it gives you a different point of view the view of what our mom and dads have to do for us, our pets, and family. Plus take care of themselves I think that it is a great game to show you how the world is like today. And our money and economy situation. In my opinion I think we need a higher minimum wage, to help get us going a little more.

  13. It means that there are more people who haven't reached the American Dream yet, or at all. Also, 1 in 3?! It may just be me who thinks this, but that's a problem! If I was in a low paying job, I don't know what I'd do. Probably get married to someone right. Haha, just kidding, but yeah. I have no idea. Well, if I was in a low paying job, I probably wouldn't trust myself to have a family. I could... maybe survive. At least for a month or so. I would feel like a bad person. :( I was probably most surprised when I heard about the man with the college degrees who still barely had enough money to get by. Usually, having a degree will get you a higher paying job.

  14. I think that it's surprising that even with a college degree, you could still end up homeless. If anything they should have some sort of counseling for homeless people so that they can get back on their feet. If I were in a low paying job, I would most likely get a college degree so I could get a better paying job, but in the mean time I would have to get second job.

  15. What does that mean in the US? That we may or may not be under paying our workers. Did you know that 1 in 3 working families are considered Low Income Families? No I did not know that that is not very good. So, what if you were stuck with a low paying job? I would try to stay healthy and get a second job. How would that affect you and your family? It would mean I wouldn't have much time with them. Could you survive? Probably. How would you feel about that? I would not feel good about being poor What were the most surprising statistics that you read or stories that you heard? I think the one were the people that live at a place were the poor are supposed to stay that they'ed kick people out.

  16. I am shocked that even when you believe you are safe and sound in a homeless shelter after losing everything you are really still in danger of being robbed and killed. I believe that in this situation I would try to find some way to earn money and use whats given to me. While watching the documentary I remembered the expression " You don't know what you have until it's gone."

  17. After watching the video, I think that they should have more dependable homelessness shelters, rather than just kicking people out when they have no were to go. After playing spent I realized that is really hard to make it through with little money for just a month at the least. Playing spent some of the times I didn't even make it through the month with money, trying to support a kid and buying food. I think that the people that are in this situation and make it through are good at managing money. After watching the video, reading the article, and playing the game, it makes me realize that it's very difficult to manage money when you have very little. The surprising statistics I found in the quiz was that hunger is not to big of a problem for the homeless people. After going through this I have learned to be appreciative of what I have, that most other people don't have.

  18. If I was stuck with a low paying job like that, then we would have to be a lot more careful with our money. My kids wouldn't be able to do sports if they wanted to, they wouldn't be able to go on field trips, and take other big opportunities that they should be able to take. But it's so hard to believe how many people in the US alone there are that are poor and can't even afford to buy a daily meal for them and their families.

  19. I did know that 1 in 3 families are considered low income and if I was stuck with a low paying job I guess I would just make the best of it though it would be hard on my hypothetical family. But I think I would pull through, maybe not be very happy but still survived.
